Neck pain is a general discomfort in the neck region usually described as stiffness in the neck and shoulders. Symptoms of neck pain include a stabbing or burning sensation in the neck. The pain often makes it difficult to perform physical activities such as swallowing.
Likely tests: The doctor will collect a brief medical history. Based on the physical examination, the doctor may recommend that a patient undergo a CAT scan, MRI scan, myelogram, electromyography or nerve exam.
Treatment options: Treatments include physical therapy, massages, injections of cortisone, muscle relaxants or surgery if needed.
Typical recovery times: Recovery may range from a few days to several months. The length of time depends on the severity of injury and the progress of the treatment.
