My Condition
Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis is a narrowing of areas in the lumbar (back) or cervical (neck) spine, causing pressure on the spinal cord and one or more of the spinal nerves. Symptoms include weakness in the arm and leg or numbness. Other symptoms may include cramping and pain in the back, neck, buttocks, thighs, calves, shoulders and arms. Most people with spinal stenosis experience difficulty in walking or standing for long periods of time.

Likely tests: The doctor will likely perform a back pain test, bone scan or a CT myelogram.

Treatment options: Mild cases of spinal stenosis can be treated with medication, epidural injections, and daily exercise.  In more severe cases, decompression surgery may be required.

Typical recovery times: Recovery time depends on the severity of spinal stenosis.  Pain may last for a few days to a few months.
